Professional Experience Profile
A portrait by Isabel Ley in Paper.
I have had more than 13 years of experience in the fields of structural and concrete materials engineering. I have worked as an engineer with a design consultant, construction contractor, government agency, and as a professor. I feel that my practical experience has made me a better teacher and researcher. I enjoy teaching, and regularly receive positive feedback and evaluations from my students (3.82/4 average rating as an instructor). I was also fortunate to be awarded the Halliburton Excellent Young Teaching award in 2011 for the College of Engineering. I have shown success in my grantsmanship as I have personally received 26 projects for over $3.4 million in funding over 5 years at Oklahoma State University including the NSF Career Award for 2012. In addition I have served as an Associate Researcher on an additional $2.3 million. I have received funding from industry, state, private, and federal sources. Several of my projects have created innovative products that have lead to patent applications. I am very active in the American Concrete Institute. I am active on the Concrete Durability, Material Science, Concrete Mixture Design and Sustainability Technical committees. In addition I serve on the executive committee of the National Concrete Consortium, a group made up of DOT engineers from 30 different states. I have a passion for creating innovative learning content. I have created two unique websites and several more innovative teaching tools. My websites have achieved over 2,000 visits in three years. I have also started an after school program at a local elementary school to promote STEM topics to underrepresented 5th graders.
